The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, located in the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, measures 192 metres in height making it the tallest arch in the world and one of the most recognized American monuments.
While the Gateway Arch just celebrated its 50th birthday, its stainless steel structure guarantees it immortality. While architect Eero Saarinen and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel designed the arch in 1947, construction did not begin until 1963 and was finished on October 28, 1965, though the public had to wait until 1967 for its opening.
Over the years the arch has become a central element of the city’s culture, and there are in fact novels, symphonies, poems, and movies that make references to the Gateway Arch.
