THE BIG TREE IN BILBAO

The Big Tree is a post-minimalist inspired sculpture, made with 73 overlapping stainless steel spheres that are anchored around three axes. Designed and built by the British artist Anish Kapoor, the sculpture has been greatly admired by tourists since its debut.

Finished in 2009, the sculpture is located in Bilbao outside of the Guggenheim museum. It is approximately thirteen meters tall and four metres long. Despite its grand stature, the sculpture appears to be energized and conveys a fictitious sense of instability. The spheres’ mirrored surfaces reflect and refract upon one another, creating spectacular lighting effects that enchant all who behold it.
