CHICAGO’S CLOUD GATE

Cloud Gate is a famous sculpture, built in 2006 in the centre of Chicago’s AT&T Plaza at Millennium Park. An extraordinary piece of contemporary art, Cloud Gate was created by British artist Anish Kapoor and took two years to complete. The sculpture is nicknamed “The Bean” thanks to its characteristic shape that resembles that of a bean.

The technique employed to build Cloud Gate is noteworthy given that the sculpture is made from 168 sheets of stainless steel, and its surface, for increased shininess, does not have any visible soldering marks. To fully understand the complexity of its construction, consider that there were 5 delicate phases of construction to complete it, and it is currently valued at $23 million.

Its colossal size makes the enormous steel cloud an unforgettable site for anyone who visits the park. Measuring 10m x 20m x 12m, and weighing more than 100 tons, the sculpture offers a wide range of optical effects that enchant all of its observers.
