The Spire

In Dublin, looking up O’Connell Street, the famous street where Nelson’s Pillar was located until 1966, it is impossible not to be taken in by the power of the futuristic monument “The Spire”. Built in 2002 by Ian Ritchie Architects, the piece is located in the centre of the Irish capital. This incredible tower of stainless steel is 120 metres high, and has a diameter that runs from three metres at its base up to 15 centimetres at its highest point. It is built in six sections of twenty metres each, making it the tallest sculpture in the world.

The project was central to the city’s urban revitalisation plan and symbolises Ireland’s struggle for independence from England. It is universally known with various names including “The Monument of Light” and “The Spike”.
